Do I need separate hair and makeup artists?

Many brides love the simplicity of having one trusted expert manage both hair and makeup, creating a cohesive look and a much calmer wedding morning.

As a guide, each service typically takes around 45–60 minutes, depending on the style, hair length and whether extensions are being used.

For smaller to medium bridal parties, I can often manage both hair and makeup myself (typically 3–4 hair and makeup clients / up to around 7–8 services, depending on timings, styles and your ceremony start time).

For larger bridal parties or earlier starts, I can bring in a trusted hairstylist or makeup artist from my team to keep everything running seamlessly (may incur an extra charge/travel fee).

Hello, I’m Evelyn, the artist behind EVS Artistry.

I’ve been in bridal for over 11 years, working across Ireland and Australia, including weddings in Italy and France.

I actually got into makeup because I used to spend all my money testing products. Foundations, powders, anything that claimed to last. That never really changed. It is still how I work now. Alongside that, I have a background in nutrition and skin health, so I don’t just look at makeup, I look at the full picture. Skin, prep, hydration, how everything will sit and wear on the day.

I’ve worked in some of the hottest climates in Australia, so longevity is something I take very seriously. Hair and makeup has to hold in real conditions, not just look good at the start.

I’ve recently moved back to Ireland and I am rebuilding my bridal business here, which I know takes time because trust is everything in this industry.

Things I’d never do as a bride Working in weddings for this long completely changes how you see bridal beauty.

You stop looking at the perfectly posed Pinterest photo and start noticing what actually lasts through hugs, crying, heat, wind, dancing, timelines running late and 14 hour wedding days.

And honestly… there are a few things I personally would never do as a bride now.

I’d never choose a look purely because it’s trending.

Some of the trends brides save online only look good in one specific pose, under studio lighting, with editing afterwards.
Then the bride sits in front of the mirror on the wedding morning and suddenly it doesn’t feel like her anymore.

I’d never leave skin prep until the month before.

The brides whose makeup always sits the most beautifully are rarely the brides wearing the heaviest makeup.
Usually it’s the brides who focused on their skin months before.
Hydration.
Stress.
Sleep.
Skin barrier.
Nutrition.
Consistency.

I’d never underestimate timelines.

Nearly every chaotic wedding morning I’ve seen has come down to trying to squeeze too much into too little time.
The calmest brides are usually the ones who gave themselves breathing room.

And I’d never expect real skin to behave like filtered skin.

Your concealer may crease slightly.
Your glow may soften throughout the day.
Your hair may move a little after hours of hugging and dancing.

That doesn’t mean your makeup failed.
It means you’re a real human being having a real wedding day.

The biggest thing weddings have taught me is this:
the brides who look the most timeless are usually the ones who still look like themselves.

Rebuilding a business sounds romantic until you’re actually in it.

Starting again in Ireland after 11 years in Australia has been humbling… but also very grounding.

A few honest lessons I’m learning:

• It’s harder than people think
You’re not just “posting pretty photos”. You’re rebuilding trust, visibility, and reputation from scratch.

• But it’s also faster the second time
I know what works now. I know what brides actually care about. I’m not guessing anymore… I’m refining.

• Visibility is everything
Right now that looks like posting consistently, even when I don’t feel like it. Because if you’re not visible, you don’t exist.

• The right brides will find you
Not everyone is your bride. And that’s actually a good thing. The goal isn’t volume, it’s alignment.

• Building a network again is no joke
Finding the right models, photographers, creatives… people you actually want to work with… takes time. And patience.

• Pricing clarity matters more than ever
Between travel, time, early starts… it adds up quickly. And yes, it still shocks me how many brides expect travel for free.

This phase feels messy at times, but I trust it.

Because I’ve done it before… and I know exactly where it leads.

After 11+ years working with brides, this is what I see all the time:

• Fair, cool-toned brides choosing warm orange/peach tones → looks off, flat, or too heavy
• Medium/olive brides going too pink → drains the skin instead of enhancing it

Destination brides this is what actually makes your makeup last

After working in 45 degree heat in Perth for 11 years I have tested what holds and what does not

Here is what you also need to know

• Setting spray matters I recommend One Size for longevity
• Your makeup should be built in layers not applied heavily this helps with hold (doesnt slide as easily)
• The bride should go second last in the schedule- not last not first
• If you are doing a first look outside you will need a touch up after
• Always bring a translucent powder with you

After 11+ years in bridal, these are the small details that make the biggest difference to how your makeup actually sits… and lasts.

Most brides think it’s about the products.
It’s not. It’s about what you do before I even touch your skin.

Here’s what I recommend to every bride:
1. Hydration doesn’t just mean drinking water
Yes, water matters… but topical hydration is just as important.
A good hyaluronic acid serum will help your makeup sit into the skin, not on top of it.
2. Stop over-exfoliating
This is one of the biggest mistakes I see.
Over-exfoliating wrecks your skin barrier → which leads to texture, sensitivity, and makeup separating.
3. Your skin will always reflect what’s happening internally
The final few weeks matter more than people think.
Balanced blood sugar, enough protein, and hydration = calmer, more radiant skin on the day.
4. Prep your lips properly
When I’m shooting content and I see dry lips in photos… it drives me mad 😅
This is a big one for wedding photos. Lip prep matters more than people think.
5. Get your brows shaped (even minimally)
It creates instant structure in the face… but it needs to be done at least 3 days before to avoid redness.
6. Train yourself not to touch your face
This alone will double the longevity of your makeup.
It’s the one thing I have to remind brides of over and over at their trial.

“nice” → to effortless, radiant, luxury bridal skin.

You’re choosing your bridal makeup artist wrong…

If your only reference is Pinterest, this is where it goes wrong.

Those photos aren’t your face, your skin, or your colouring… and most brides don’t check if their artist has actually created those looks in real life.

And I get it… everyone has a budget.
But choosing your artist based on price alone is where things can really fall apart.

Not every makeup artist can create every look.
And on your wedding morning… your makeup can make or break how you feel.

Before you book, ask yourself this instead:
• Do they have photos of looks I genuinely like?
• Have they worked on brides with similar skin tone, features, or style to me?
• Is their work consistent… or hit and miss?

Anyone can recreate a trend
But the right artist knows how to adapt it to YOU

Back in Ireland 5 weeks and I’m already getting mornings like this 🥹💖

This was a group heading to a wedding in Kilkenny. Soft, glowy, skin that actually looks like skin. My favourite kind of glam ✨

I travelled to them for this one. I do this for bookings of 4+ and it honestly makes the whole morning feel so much nicer. No rushing around, everyone relaxed, music on, and ready early

We finished around 11:30 which is always the goal. Calm mornings over chaotic ones every time

I usually work from Aura Studio on Saturdays. I’m based in Wexford Town Industrial Estate near The Farmers Kitchen, but for larger bookings I travel to you which makes such a difference to the morning

Then it was straight into the studio to work on content and strategy. This is something I’ve spent a lot of time on in Australia, learning what actually grows a beauty business, not just posting for the sake of it
